Banana & Watermelon Smoothie

Text_1

Another smoothie, another day. Nothing all that new going on right now apart from the death-zombie-plague that has stricken me. Nothing more fun than waking up thinking you have a new kind of sickness that hasn’t even been discovered yet because it is so bad, right? Wrong. Terrible. It’s some black magic-voodoo stuff.

2Regardless of my cold, I still tried to put some sunshine back into my bed-ridden days with a watermelon smoothie. Ultimate summer fruit. Hands down. Don’t argue because it’s true. And yes that is me dipping watermelon INTO my watermelon.

Extreme Smoothie Roundup!

I know I’ve been a tad MIA for a few months and I will just blame that on the accessibility of taking iPhone photos.

So quick, so easy. No photoshop.

Then a friend suggested I simply take all of my iPhone photos (really just meant for instagram) and post them in one giant smoothie roundup (because my instagram has taken a turn into smoothie-land).

I make a new kind of smoothie for myself for breakfast everyday and it really is the only breakfast that keeps me sufficiently full. Considering I can sneak in some boosters – chia seeds, hemp, spinach, kale, dates. It really is the best. Who needs to digest things fully from the start when you can jump start the process and make it easier on your body? AND there are 8000 combinations. Infinite, one might say, ENDLESS even. Yes. Endless smoothie creations. Sign me up. So let us begin, shall we?

Green Detox Smoothie

DSC_0019

Before the holidays start this year I’ve decided it is SUPER important to come up with at least 800 (too many??) detox smoothie recipes so that I don’t feel completely disgusting with myself with the amount of sugar I am soon to consume (on top of the stress-eating of final assignments and exams).

DSC_0012

This smoothie is an unlikely combo of amazing ingredients that work PERFECTLY. I was pleasantly surprised.

I also felt amazing after I drank it.

DSC_0007

3/4 cup frozen mango
3/4 cup chopped, packed kale
2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley
1 celery stalk, washed and chopped
8 fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup orange juice
3/4 cup coconut water

1. Place all in blender and combine.

Raspberry Almond Date Smoothie

Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next.  Face the facts of being what you are, for that is what changes what you are.  Change the changeable, accept the unchangeable, and remove yourself from the unacceptable. Just like our good friend Oscar Wilde says – “Be yourself because everyone else is taken.”

DSC_0006

Change is never an easy thing, a constant adjustment. I’m learning that. It may be a good change, a bad change, whatever. It is always going to be an adjustment regardless of what happened. Change is a time for self discovery and improvement. Things you didn’t even about yourself emerge to the surface, and you come to realize you are an ever-evolving, wonderful human being. Going through a major adjustment has allowed me to begin thinking about respecting myself more, allowing myself to truly be authentic and never granting anyone the satisfaction of trying to change who I am. Even if they didn’t mean to or weren’t aware they were really hindering my true self. Its a miraculous event to come up from a bad time and say “hey, I am okay and I am a better me.” It is an opportunity to thank people for helping to mould and discover who you are.

Along with all the personal growth that comes with change, also comes a new exploration and admiration for interesting and fun recipes. Just because I’m focusing on my own growth doesn’t mean my recipes can’t join in on the fun as well. There really isn’t a better way to experiment with different combinations than in a smoothie. This raspberry almond date smoothie can easily be customizable (ahh, the beauty of smoothies) but I urge you to try it as is the first time. You won’t regret it (and neither will your taste buds).

DSC_0024

1 cup fresh raspberries (alternatively you could use strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or cherries)
2/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
3-4 medjool dates (if your blender is weak, I suggest soaking them in hot water for 5 minutes prior to blending)
1 tbsp ground flax
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp almond butter
1/2 tsp cinnamon
ice

1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth!

Mango-Berry Protein Refresher

Screw humidity. Seriously. There is nothing I hate more than sticky, disgusting humidity. In the middle of summer when it’s hot as hell outside, add in that pesky humidity and what do you get? Bad hair and sweat coming out of every part of you. Literally. Thank God for living in a place where this isn’t a thing all year long. I don’t think I would be able to handle myself if I lived in a humidity all day every day kind of situation.

But wait Casey… I know how to cool you down on those hot summer days! How you ask?

MANGO SMOOTHIE!!!

Alright, I guess that works pretty well.

For anyone that doesn’t own a single serving blender… you must buy one. I think it is the most fantastic piece of kitchen equipment  that anyone can ever buy. When you just want to make a smoothie, a simple little smoothie, but you gotta’ lug out the giant blender, the one that when it’s out on the counter it takes up the whole damn thing, and it doesn’t fit properly in your cabinets. BOOM! Single serving blender appears! Small enough to store anywhere, and to keep out if you’re an avid smoothie maker like I am, it is seriously the best thing ever. I could go on forever about why everyone should get one of these. Not to mention it was cheap! 15 buckeroos.

DSC_0008

There are a lot of ingredients in this smoothie, but I promise it’s worth it. Sweet and refreshing, packed with protein and vitamins. What else could you need on a sweltering hot summer day? When I’m going to the gym for a tough workout it really does me good for the walk to the gym. Oh, and also giving me enough fuel to power through my workouts without feeling hungry at all!

DSC_0009

Ingredients:
1/2 cup frozen or fresh cubed mango
1/2 cup frozen of fresh strawberries
1/2 banana
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup pineapple juice
1 tbsp hemp seeds
1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
1 tsp fresh grated ginger
1 tsp lime juice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 scoops vanilla whey protein

1. Put all ingredients in a blender and combine until smooth.

Tropical Protein Smoothie

DSC_0011Has anyone ever tried the Vega plant protein? It’s disgusting! I don’t know how anyone drinks that stuff! Let alone even looks at it…. it’s this disgusting brown colour that reminds me of you know what. It even smells like seaweed. Alright, if that’s your thing…cool. But HOW are you drinking this stuff???? I couldn’t even get half of it down before I felt like I was going to throw up. The creators of Vega protein should have really tasted the product before releasing it out into the world. Blech.

I’ve been experimenting with protein powders lately and I’ve found that most of the vegan protein powders just don’t digest well and taste awful. Come on people, who is going to come up with a vegan powder that actually tastes edible and doesn’t make me bloated beyond belief? Unfortunately, I can’t wait around for that so I began my experimentation with whey protein which is made from dairy. So far, I’ve found that the Alpha Whey is the best tasting and most easily digested. The vanilla flavoring of some protein powders can be overwhelmingly sweet and I’m just not down for that, but the Alpha protein has a good vanilla flavor. It doesn’t make me bloated, and keeps me full and energetic until lunchtime (boo ya!).

DSC_0002This is the kind of smoothie you’d want to have while you were relaxing in a comfy chair in your backyard, in the early morning sun of summer. It’s thick and creamy, tangy, and sweet.

DSC_00031/2 cup cubed mango
1/2 cup chopped pineapple
1/2 cup chopped strawberries
2/3 cup orange juice
1 – 2 scoops vanilla whey protein
1 tbsp ground flax seed
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon

1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

*Note – whey protein sometimes doesn’t blend well at first, I recommend pulsing until it’s combined just a little bit to get the ball rolling.

Start Right Smoothie

I really really like this smoothie. It’s a bit unconventional, adding nuts and wheat germ into the equation. The added protein makes it a really good way to have energy for the rest of your day. Smoothies are really cool that way. You can literally throw any kind of nut, a whole cinnamon stick, different spices, fruits, yogurts and a load of other ingredients into it.

A lot of people think that smoothies have to be boring and there are no ways to make them extra special, and to those people I say: TRY THIS SMOOTHIE!

Makes 1 serving

1/2 banana, cut into chunks
3 medium frozen strawberries, thawed
1 cup almond milk (or soy, or non-fat)
1/8 cup wheat germ
1/8 cup almonds, roughly chopped (measure out the whole almond then chop them)
1 tbsp honey
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup ice

1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth and everything is incorporated.
